Flipping through my daily reading, I came across this gem – DVD Security Group Says It Fixed Flaws

On Monday, the group that developed the Advanced Access Content System said it had worked with device makers to deactivate those keys and refresh them with a new set.

Companies such as Corel Corp., which owns InterVideo, makers of a popular PC-based playback software, will also distribute more secure versions, said Michael Ayers, chairman of the AACS License Administrator.

“The device keys associated with the InterVideo player are being deactivated and InterVideo has updated its player,” Ayers said. “They are taking steps that block off access to the inner workings of the application.”

New high-def DVDs will include updated keys and instructions for older versions of the PC-playback software not to play discs until the software patch has been installed.

It’s not that I’m new to the game or anything, but does this statement not just reek of hubris — of the safe and secure knowledge that “of course we were expecting breakage — but we’ve just taken a few moments to mop that up and now it’s time to return to the show.”

The Entertainment Industry is losing a battle – and some of us are benefitting.

Isn’t this the exact problem that we all face every day in dealing with the institutionalization of infosec as a growth industry?

Doesn’t the phrase “infosec is a growth industry” make you want to scream and run around in circles?

Why is it that as a society we’re so willing to accept oligarchs and technocrats and mediocrity.

Am I turning into a parody of Doctorow, raving about being a venture altruist?

Why – WHY is it ok for the infosec community to continue to support “growing the brand”, “increasing the number of committed information security professionals”? Why do ISC2 and ISACA think that the best thing in the world is more certified professionals (based on recent interviews — dabblers and dilletantes)? Why is it that there are 22 NAC vendors trying to sell me a solution to a problem WHICH SHOULDN’T EXIST?

Why do my rants always derail themselves?

Have a great day – and please do your part to make it less about the product and more about the problem.
