Section 202c StGB of the German computer crime law has gone into effect this past weekend. We have already seen projects like KisMAC shutdown as a result. We first picked up this piece in May of this year. I have spoken with a couple friends in Germany who are involved in computer security and they are beside themselves.
This is a remarkably short sighted piece of legislation that may have been born in good intentions. It has now become yet another paving stone on the road to hell.
So, what can you do? Well, there is a group that you can dig into called the Hacker Foundation. They provide a host of services one of which is the Hacker Spaces Initiative.
Hacker Spaces Initiative is a internally initiated Hacker Foundation project, to assist in the creation and maintenance of hacker spaces in the United States. The foundation views hacker spaces as the basis of a larger and more influential hacker community. A lot of the motivation for this project is based on the plethora of wonderful hacker spaces that HF staff has seen in Europe(specifically, CCC territory).
Worth checking out.
