Once upon a time being a hacker was a cool thing. It was all about ego or the sense of adventure. It was the wild west for geeks. There was a sense of excitement when you could access a system that should otherwise be secure. Then came the hacker lore, the movies War Games, Hackers and later the Matrix. There were the Attrition crowd, L0pht and the cDc for starters.

In an age that speeds along on technology, cracking systems is the equivalent of robbing stagecoaches in a bygone era.

This piece on CIO Today attempts to sort out the terminology as well as the lore.

“In the old days, computers were much more the domain of the elite few who understood technology, and another myth that has evolved is that hackers are all brilliant,” Gordon said. “Hackers aren’t rocket scientists. They just know their way around computer systems.”

Interesting read.
