Australian gov computers are in the news again today. Apparently hackers are at it again trying to gain access to government agency systems.
From Stuff NZ:
Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland yesterday said there had been attempts to break in to classified networks.
“It’s fair to say that the Australian government has detected attempted intrusions in respect to, obviously, government agencies,” McClelland told reporters in Canberra.
Last year, the computer network of German chancellor Angela Merkel was breached with suspicions quickly falling on Chinese spies.
McClelland would not say which nation, if any, was responsible for the attacks on Australia.
“It’s both unsafe and inappropriate to speculate as to potential sources of those intrusions.”
McClelland warned the attempts had to be taken as a threat to the nation.
“We have got to take this risk. . . very, very seriously.”
Australian National University (ANU) academic Michael McKinley said it would be naive not to think this sort of attempted espionage was a regular occurrence.
“The question would be whether it is a nation state,” McKinley told AAP.
