Are things so completely nuts in the US that someone who connects to a wireless AP can’t get 9 years in lockup? Over on the great blog A Day in the Life of an Information Security Investigator Security Monkey has a post about Brian Salcedo, 23, who received a 9 year sentence for using an unsecured wireless network at a Lowe’s store.

But, it turns out that he wasn’t just checking his sports scores.

Brian and a partner in crime, Adam Botbyl, accessed the open wireless networks from their car. They found that they could access the main corporate network and every store’s local LAN. They also found that they could modify a program called tcpCredit which would catch and log customer credit card numbers.

Er, um, OK. I would hazard that 9 years in the clink is a very appropriate sentence. Further to that end somebody should get fired from Lowe’s. By leaving an open wireless network that could access the customer data they should have their heads examined.
