Google has the best search engine. I have no hesitation saying that. But, things get a little squirrely when you take that search and have in an application, namely Google Desktop. This application is a frightening prospect because there is the potential (real of imagined) to drill down into a corporate desktop and make confidential files accessible to the world. From an article on Silicon.com we find a piece on CIO fears about the potential data breaches.

Peter Maddigan, associate director, IT systems at Budget Insurance, said: “I know if I, as the person responsible for IT, advocate using Google in an organisation and as a consequence a proposed acquisition was compromised, I’d lose my job.”

One has to learn to strike a balance. Just because you may advocate the use of Google as a search engine it is by no means a carte blanche acceptance of all of the Google products.

Then again…where are the other Google (non-lab) products anyway?
