Having just written about Cisco’s ability to annoy the hacker/security community with their strong arm tactics I’m amused to see they are in the sites again. This time I highly doubt that Cisco will be able to shut down the presenters at Black Hat and DefCon. This year there will be no less than 15 new exploits discussed for Cisco products. This on the heels of their MARS vulnerabilities. Among the exploits to be discussed will be two in their NAC offering (which only runs off routers which I find really odd) and with their VoIP offerings.
Last year Cisco sued Black Hat conference organizers after security researcher Michael Lynn demonstrated a method for running unauthorized code on a Cisco router. It was a difficult technical achievement that had been considered impossible by some, but Cisco saw it to be a dangerous disclosure of information that could be used to harm the Internet’s infrastructure.
I’m curious how Cisco will approach the issue this year. Will they create a dialogue with the community or will they ride with their four horsemen of the legal system?
