It’s moments like this that I would hazard that the folks at Twitter are starting to think that keeping IP addresses in log files may be more of a pain in the ass than they might have once thought.

From Wired:

On December 14, Twitter received a bizarre subpoena from the District Attorney of Suffolk County, which includes Boston.

It requested “All available subscriber information, for the account or accounts associated with the following information, including IP address logs for account creation and for the period December 8, 2011 to December 13, 2011.” The named targets included two hashtags, two accounts, and one proper name

That “proper name” was none other than Guy Fawkes. Um, yeah.

But, as goofy as this might seem on the surface of it, with it being an election year and all, it is a harbinger of things to come. With the recent signing into law of NDAA by Obama, “the president has awarded the military extraordinary powers to detain US citizens without trial”.

What does this have to do with IP addresses? Nothing at first blush but, as we start to see more an more of these cases develop it isn’t that much of a stretch to see how the fall out from the Anonymous shenanigans will build.

Piece by piece rights and freedoms are being whittled away.

  1. while neither condoning nor condemning, rights and freedoms have been slipping away gradually for a long time.

perhaps an accelerated pace will help the frog realize that the pot is starting to boil.
