What could possibly go wrong in this situation? And more to the point, does that agent still have a job?

From CityTV:

A Canadian man has found an unusual way to get through U.S. Customs — by flashing an iPad.

Martin Reisch says a U.S. border officer let him cross after he presented only a scanned copy of his passport on the computer tablet.

The Montrealer says he was about a half-an-hour drive from the Vermont border last week when he realized he had forgotten his passport at home.

Reisch says the customs agent seemed mildly annoyed when he handed him the iPad — but checked out his file anyway and allowed him to pass.

I…um…well… (head asplode)

  1. Surely it is not (yet!) a legal requirement to have a passport to cross the Canada-US border? (I can just picture the refugee camps of people not allowed to go home if their passport were lost or stolen!)

It’s just that a passport is the simplest way of proving entitlement to cross, but either a passport or an iPad would need to be checked against a central source to validate it had not been forged.

  2. and this is me on top of Mount Everest, this is me shaking hands with Einstein, and this is me at the Photoshop Conferrrr…..nvm.
