There are somethings about the US that I enjoy. Their zest for life, the beautiful cities and the people. There are a lot of good people in the US and I’m saddened when I read articles such as this one from CNN.

Now, to be completely clear, this is a positive article by CNN. The part that I find sickening is the root of the article and that was a story that originally was posted in “Insight Magazine”. The article claimed that the up and coming senator Barak Obama had attended a “madrassa” as a child.

Vause also interviewed one of Obama’s Basuki classmates, Bandug Winadijanto, who claims that not a lot has changed at the school since the two men were pupils. Insight reported that Obama’s political opponents believed the school promoted Wahhabism, a fundamentalist form of Islam, “and are seeking to prove it.”

“It’s not (an) Islamic school. It’s general,” Winadijanto said. “There is a lot of Christians, Buddhists, also Confucian. … So that’s a mixed school.”

The inference being that Obama is of a fanatical mind. Now, this has all of the hallmarks of a right wing smear campaign and that is quite sad. I guess that the Republican camp feels it does not have the capability to match up to Obama and other democrats (Clinton was smeared as well, effectively) on merit. I would love to see a race for the US presidency that is run on the merit of the issues and not on the mud slinging that keeps the knuckle draggers at FOX News in business.

I like a great deal about the US but, they can keep their political system. It’s for the birds.
