One of the problems that can be rather a pain in the arse when running a blog site are the spam comments. Spammers, loathsome little maggots that they are. They try everything under the sun to get their fictitious comments posted in the hopes that some reader will follow them back to a spam or malware infested site. It’s a constant battle. There are some great tools out there to help moderate the spam flood but, sometimes there are ones that require a closer examination. This is a great deal of the reason why we moderate comments here at Liquidmatrix. That and to deal with the occasional douchebag that has nothing better to do with their time.
Well, this is not a problem isolated to the niche sites like ours. One such example is the comments section at ZDNet. I noticed this one a few weeks ago and fired off a message. Sadly, the spam comment remains. This comment was on an ATM skimmer article and it is directing readers to…a way to buy them.
Um, yeah. Commenting is an integral part of what sets blogging apart from mainstream media. That being said, it pays to keep on top of your comment sections. Especially if there is no moderation.
Run your own site? What has worked for you when managing the spam comments? What hasn’t? Leave a comment…
and yes, they’re moderated.
🙂
Bah hah hah hah….
Not all comments are moderated – trust is a dangerous concept 😀
Hmm. Note to self, time to review access control 🙂

I think one of the more important things is to lock comment sections on older posts, with the possible ability to leave them open for key posts that may get more hits over time.
