It looks like the attack on Estonia’s infrastructure by Russian hackers in 2007 has lit a fire under their behinds to do something about it not happening again. The Estonian government has been recruiting tech savy security experts and hackers to work together in preparing for potential future attacks. They are even tossing around the idea of a draft:
So far, all the members are part of the organization because they volunteered, and they spend part of their weekends carrying out simulated exercises of cyber attacks in order to keep their skills honed and ready. But, Estonia’s Defense Minister Jaak Aaviksoo and the authorities are thinking about the possibility of instituting a draft for all skilled cyber experts and instituting a real cyber army.
Do you see the U.S. or other countries doing similar things? I definitely could see some countries following in these footsteps, if they haven’t all ready. It has been long believed China is all ready doing this on a large scale and just not as “publiclyâ€. I say it like that because they might not talk to western news sources but they certainly aren’t sitting dormant.
Either way this kind of draft is an interesting concept and one that we have not seen before. I’m interested to see where it goes.
