Further thoughts on Patch Tuesday

I still haven’t completely digested all of the most recent patch dump – I know, I should be faster, but we got the better part of a metre of snow yesterday and it took a while to dig out.

From WaPo a surprisingly good source of journalism on computer security, we get the “Is Vista really good?” article which outlines far more eloquently than I could some of the problems with the new “security model” of Vista (yes, those were Mike Myers-esque “air quotes”).

LSD fave Joanna Rutkowska is quoted:

“Even though there are some flaws in it currently … they could be fixed over time, if Microsoft put enough effort in doing this,” she wrote. Otherwise, “in a couple of months the security of Vista (from the typical malware’s point of view) will be equal to the security of current XP systems.”

I don’t really have a good follow-up line to that… but I can tell you that all too many people in many industry verticals are looking at Vista the same way they looked at Windows ME. And we all know how that ended up.
