Google’s Orkut Hit By Data-Stealing Worm

There is a new data stealing worm making the rounds on Google’s Orkut social networking site. This latest addition to the malware menagerie was discovered by the IM company FaceTime. The service is majorly popular with Brazilians.

When infected Orkut users using Microsoft Corp.’s widely used Windows XP operating system to find personal files on their PCs through their “My Computer” icon, that triggers an e-mail back to the creator of MW.Orc creator filled with personal information stored on the PC, FaceTime said.

The new threat to Orkut follows an earlier worm, Banker-BWD, which was uncovered by Sophos, an anti-virus company.

I’m still not one for these social networking sites that have been dominating the news of late. I can see that these would be a perfect attack vector for malware. Orkut, MySpace, et cetera are admittedly lost on yours truely. I’m sure they are great for what they are but, I’d much rather wander over to my local coffee shop and talk to my neighbours in person. That being said be sure to update your antivirus solutions asap.
