Why hello LiquidMatrix readers! It has been quite a while since the last time I poked my head up here. I won’t bore you with all the personal reasons of my absence but if you feel curious you can go ahead and check out my blog post about the past 6 months over at my blog.

The thick and the thin of it all is that my house got broken into the first week at my new place after moving 3000 miles. Among the many items stolen were my computers so needless to say blogging would be a bit difficult.
I decided that my first post back after my long absence would be some advice on things I did and some things I could have done differently.

First and number 1 thing I wish I did that probably would have helped big time would to have installed this free software called Prey. A great idea and open source project that lets users track devices marked as stolen and report GPS locations and go so far as turn on the webcam to take pictures of the thieves. If I had this installed on my devices it might have helped me find the people who broke in.

An obvious one for a lot of security folk is to change all of your passwords immediately in case any browser history or auto-logged in desktop/mobile applications might give unwanted access to your accounts. Also password protecting your devices to begin with to help protect against physical access.

A less obvious one (at least it was to me) is to record all serial numbers off of electronic devices in case they are to come up in any police investigations that is the only thing they really have to go off of that it is your device. On a less effective note, knowing any unique identifying features or malfunctions also helps.

Oh and maybe a good home security system 😉

Feel free to share some tips here with me and fellow readers but number one tip I have is to definitely check out Prey.

Happy New Year to everybody and I hope you all have had a great past 6 months or so since I’ve been off the blogosphere.

See more of you in 2011.
Cheers,
Matt
