As the borgification of the IT world continues on with larger companies gobbling up smaller ones at an alarming rate I have to ask…how long until the merging of the three? What do I mean? Well, (in a mood to cause some sh*t) I was checking out some finance numbers for Apple, Google and (at Myrcurial’s suggestion) Sun.

Microsoft has been beating it’s chest about the likes of the aforementioned, while failing to keep Ballmer on a short leash. To their credit however, I believe that they have been making great strides to improve the security of their products. Now, what I propose would be to simply mess with their heads in the worst possible way.

Step one would be for Apple, at a market capitalization of $74.82 billion, to purchase Sun Microsystems outright. Sun, incidentally, has a market cap of $21.72 billion. So, it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility. Apple will more than likely be printing money with the release of the iPhone and the release of Leopard. These two companies could go a long way to complimenting each other by further extending Apple’s reach into the world’s data centers. After a digestion period of a few months enter Google, stage right.

Now, Google is quite literally the 800 lb gorilla. The market cap for Google is a very healthy $139.5 billion (all numbers based on todays close). This means that they could conceivably open a controlling position in Apple at that point.

Simple and clean (theoretically). Google will have reached into the server, desktop, laptop, TV and mobile markets. Coupled with the web based applications from Google such as Gmail, Calendar , Documents (formerly Writely) et cetera, we find the basis for the centralized digital life.

Google has the opportunity to do to Microsoft what Microsoft did to IBM. Microsoft would fade into the sunset. Poetic no?

Start the rumour mill. And if Google is interested, Myrcurial and I would be more than happy to work for their Canadian operation security team. 🙂

UPDATE: Here we see Sun’s Jonathan Schwartz publicly praising Google Maps on his blog (March 18th, 2007).
