Another person (this time it is a “scientist” *GASP*) saying passwords will be dead soon.
Passwords have been around since ancient history, but they may become obsolete sooner than you think. According to a recent prediction by IBM Speech CTO David Nahamoo, many of the problems with passwords will be solved by biometric systems that can identify individuals based on unique biological features.
Biometrics have been around for a long time to unlock laptops with your face or your fingerprint but I think it is a foolish statement to say that it will “replace passwords”.
Even if biometrics are more widely adopted (which would be a good thing), saying passwords will be replaced is like saying Internet Explorer is dead.

i think if passwords really do wind up getting supplanted by biometrics a lot of security folks are going to be in for a nasty surprise.
right now most people are judging biometrics on engineering criteria – does it function, does it allow me in – they aren’t looking at the security or the failure conditions.
