I was working from my home office this afternoon with RobTV (Canada’s answer to Bloomberg) in the background when an interesting interview was aired. Peter Reid, the Chief Privacy Officer for EDS Canada, was interviewed after his return from RSA 2007. He was quizzed on his opinion with respects to the state of information security in 07. The interviewer queried Peter on laptop encryption and why more businesses weren’t doing it. They also talked about ID theft and privacy concerns. I’m personally a fan of rolling out crypto to laptops in an enterprise where it is deemed necessary. I don’t believe in rolling it out unless there is a valid business driver.

Now, my favourite aspect of this interview was the mere fact that it was on a financial show. Sure there is a great deal of visibility with respects to SOX compliance et cetera but, this is not an information security publication! That is the best part. The message is getting out there more and more. I would like to see more interviews like this in mainstream media as this helps to further educate the John Q. Publics of the world.
