One of the more frustrating aspects of being a security wonk in Canada is the general absence of security conferences such as Black Hat, Shmoocon, CanSecWest (an exception) and the like. Well, there are a couple and one of the offerings that are available is the Infosecurity Canada conference in Toronto. This year I will be attending Infosecurity Canada conference. For a change I won’t have to get onto a plane watch crappy HBO flicks and eat hotel food for a week.
This years conference, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, spans three days all told with various tracks offered to attendees. The four available tracks are “technical”, “compliance”, “emerging threats” and “privacy, identity and risk”. A little bit of something for everyone.
I attended the first offering of Infosecurity Canada a few years ago and I had my reservations. I did not hold it against them at the time as they were a fledgling offering in my home town. I wanted to see this conference grow. Now, several years later I’m heading back to the conference and I have my pencil sharp (yes, I am still an old school scribbler from my newspaper days). I will provide some live blogging if feasible but, I’m not sure if there will be wireless access available at the show.
The local security space will be well represented by such firms as CMS Consulting, Allstream, Whitehat, Watchfire and Telus to name a few. I’m quite pleased to see that Ajay Sood will be giving a talk. Ajay has worked for IronPort (now Cisco) now for quite some time and is a great person to talk to on email security problems and antivirus in general. Be sure to take in his presentation “Emerging Internet Messaging Threats” on Thursday.
If you are looking for a show to check out in Toronto come down and give it a whirl. The cost is reasonable and I’m hopeful that it will surpass their original outing. Be sure to to check back later this week for coverage of the conference.
