Microsoft Promises Disk Encryption For Longhorn

At the WinHEC conference in Seattle, Microsoft has announced that they will be offering encryption in Loghorn. The much delayed release of Longhorn will include Bitlocker encryption technology. This crypto makes use of a USB key and the TPM 1.2 chip. This may require a hardware upgrade for anyone thinking about leveraging this technology. The TPM 1.2 chip is not hardware that is commonly available today. The thought being that this will help companies combat server/data theft.

“It is becoming more apparent how often these systems are disappearing,” said Mike Tricker, a programme manager for Windows core platform architecture.”Somebody decides that it’s a really nice box to have at home and then all your corporate data has just disappeared.”

That being said there are alternatives such as PGP.
