New Virus Attacks AMD Processors

AMD is slowly but surely growing it’s share of the processor market. They were able to keep their research costs way down by attending Intel presentations. Not bad. At Black Hat this year we saw several rootkits that leveraged both AMD and Intel chip sets.

Today there is news of a new virus that specifically targets the AMD processor. Now, I’m not long on conspiracy theories but, the mind could really run wild with this one.

“If I can get to the processor level, potentially I can really start tying myself into the core hardware. I can potentially evade some of the kernel protection and user protection. There is an attraction to virus writers to get to the lowest level possible,” Weafer told vnunet.com.

“Once it runs, I’ve got pretty low level access to that system and I could do pretty well anything that I would want to do.”
