What is arguably the best port scanner on the market has moved into the 4.x phase. With the release of this latest version we find NMAP as a mature and powerful scanning tool. NMAP will run on pretty much any operating system that might use from *nix to Mac and Windows.
One of my biggest beefs with this tool has always been the operating system identification and detection. It has never been altogether accurate. Well, with this latest release we find that this has been addressed. This version has 3000+ OS signatures and with roughly 400 services that it can identify. This should provide greatly improved information gathering. There are precompiled binaries available but, I always recommend compiling from source code. For those of you that are not command line freaks there is a simple GUI front end available.
This tool is a must have for any pentester or network administator. As always, the best part is that this tool is freely available for download.
