Well sh*t. I have to say I’m quite surprised at the about face that Microsoft has taken with their partner RSA. In Feb 2004 both companies were shouting to the rafters about the benefits of the MS/RSA integration of SecurID tokens. Now, Microsoft is dumping support for these in the next release of the operating system to be called Vista. Now what is the underlying reason behind this? Well, it turns out that the sales of the SecurID tokens have not taken off.
“It has gone slowly, and it has gone slowly for a number of reasons,” Coviello said. “Microsoft has given us source code so we can replace the Microsoft logon screen. However, it is not yet native to the operating system. So it still requires some work at the desktop, which slows down the adoption rate.”
