Well, I can’t say that his comes as any great surprise. After the debacle in late May which saw hundreds of Chinese user of Symantec have their computers blue screened due to a process flaw there is now a lawsuit afoot.
Liu’s lawsuit, reckoned to be the first of its kind in China, could open the floodgates for similar claims. But security experts are skeptical of the possibility of the action succeeding because of Symantec’s limited warranty.
“Obviously I’m no expert in Chinese law, but here in the West, an action of this type is unlikely to succeed because of the warranty conditions that IT vendors normally apply to their software,” said Phil Higgins, a senior partner with systems integrator Brookcourt Solutions.
In all fairness to Symantec, this could have easily happened to any of the antivirus vendors. Just happened to be their bad luck. However, if this were to be a successful lawsuit it could possibly effect a significant change to companies and how they handle software updates. I have my money on updated EULAs that cover vendors from anything under the sun. I’ll be following this story as it develops.
