About six years ago the admin assistant in our office started getting calls from collection agents. They were threatening to take her car, her house et cetera. This was especially worrisome because she didn’t own a house. She lived with her fiance at the time. Hmmm, I smelled a rat. Along with some of the furry toothed staffers we managed to painstakingly track her financial wheelings and dealings. Coupled with some extensive searches online we managed to track it down to an PO box in Montana. As it turned out an employee of a certain womans clothing online retailer had been selling the personal information of the their customer base. Well here is an article that tackles where in the US the worst cases of ID theft occur.

For the second year in a row, Arizona topped the Federal Trade Commission’s list of states with the most identity-theft complaints, with 142.5 victims per 100,000 people in 2004. Nevada and California followed closely behind with 125.7 and 122.1 victims per 100,000 people, respectively.
