Tor Hack Reports Downplayed

From Ars Technica:

Tor, the system for anonymizing Internet traffic by routing it through a succession of “onion” routers, has been compromised. In the lab. Using a previously-known exploit. One that has yet to be seen in the wild. And one that was researched in consultation with Tor developers.

Despite all these details, the security research done by a University of Colorado computer science team exploded across the blogosphere in the last week and generated considerable frustration among the developers of the software. In an official post about the issue, one member of the development team wrote, “Blogstorms can have real world consequences. Please ponder before you write, critically examine what you read, and ask us for updates.”

The paper that started it all. The cascade effect of the assertion that Tor was now hacked spread like wildfire. For the full posting please read on.
