Virus names likely a lost cause

One of the most frustrating parts of the antivirus aspect of my work is the naming conventions. There is/was a naming convention that had been agreed upon among the AV vendors. The Computer Antivirus Research Organization (CARO) introduced this naming convention in 1991. But, time and again this has fallen by the wayside. In February this was completely thrown to the wind. A virus was discovered that went by (and still does) Blackmal, Nyxem, MyWife, KamaSutra, Blackworm, Tearec and Worm_Grew. How am I supposed to help keep my environments safe when the AV vendors cannot keep a naming convention straight? There is a new effort underway from Mitre but, why would this succeed where CARO failed? CME is supposed to help rather than solve the problem. My question is simple. Why can’t the AV vendors play nice?
